As several of you know, we are having some problems with pictures posting properly. There are about a half dozen reports sitting in limbo. Until Aaron can get the issue sorted out all I can say is hang in there, we will get it fixed. Better now I guess than 3 months ago when we had 10-20 reports a day.

Just a quick note. I had been having problems posting pictures with reports when the new site was initially unveiled. I changed the size of my picture formatting from 1028x764 to 800x600 for those pics I wanted to attach to reports and I haven't had a problem since.

That is the size (800x600) I always use and I don't think I have had a problem.

just an update, Aaron is working on the problem right now - after having his hard drive crash today. Let's hope that's all the bad luck for now. I feel really bad about the reports with pictures that are waiting to get posted. It'll happen soon I hope.

Good to hear that, Mike. I resubmitted a report for photos only (Lake Roosevelt 10/24) and it never made it. Must be one of the ones you said are in the wings. Aaron deserves a raise! cheers

well, lets not get carried away now. He'll get his lump of coal at Chrsitmas like usual.

If you don't see your pictures show up in the next week send them straight to Aaron at support@washingtonlakes.com. Be sure to note which report they should be added to.

Sorry to burst your bubble Mike, but it's only half fixed! There is still some unknown thing happening when "some" reports are sent in... the pics just dissapear... but I'm working on that half of the problem now. I think it has something to do with the length of time people are taking to enter their report. If you're going to take more than 10-15 minutes to write your report out then write it up in Notepad and just copy/paste it into the report and hit submit... otherwise the photo data will be lost. It's an IIS session timeout thing...I think. I have a workaround for it but I have to redesign the report page logic to fix it. At least I have a handle on the problem now and we can now FIX the photos when they send them to us. Smile

OK all, the latest word. We're in better shape than we were, anyway. Glad this isn't happening in May!

I'll echo Dave's thanks as well. It's nice to see the photos with reports, for me, it makes the report.

I was wondering, since someone else mentioned it, does resizing the picture prior to upload really matter? I just "assumed" resizing was part of the upload process so I always upload the full resolution photo, seems to make for nicer pics to look at IMO.

PS - Is that ProV getting wet Aaron? You slopping fish blood on it? I sure hope so! We're heading to Roosevelt next weekend and will be there Fri/Sat/Sun. Watch for the reports. cheers

I'm putting the finishing touches on our RW Cabin by the River trip and yes, There Will Be Blood!

Resizing to say 1200x___ and reducing resolution a bit is helpful because it is quicker to upload and also takes less space on the sever hardrive. I think 2-300 kb files are fine for web site purposes. I know when you upload a huge file it does reduce the size, but I'm not sure if the original file sits in storage or how it works, so best to reduce from the start.

The other picture problems we are IDing are odd characters in the the file names (like ! * ") these cause a problem. Also LONGGGGGGGGG file names cause a problem. And finally, uploading a picture and then waiting too long to post the report seems to cause the photo to become "dissacciated" with the report. Don't ask me why, I'm not the tech guy!

One other picture repair request.

If you post a report and for some reason the pictures don't show up, e-mail them to me with your report date, User Name, and report location. I can easily add them to your report so they are associated with the report. If you resubmit a new report with the pictures attached to that new report it's not possible to easily transfer them to the old report.

My address: mike@washingtonlakes.com

Thanks!

Anytime your photo doesn't show up, just e-mail it to me and I'll add it to the report. Include your User Name, location, and date of the report. Thanks, Mike

We are having a rash of "no pictures with reports" issues. Here's a few things that will help with uploading pictures with your fishing reports:

1) reduce the file for the web. Under 500kb is perfect, 2mb files choke the system. Most photo editing software will have an option for resizing for e-mail or web. There is no need for a big file on a web page.

2) don't have any odd characters in the file name. I'm not talking about your fishing buddy, I'm talking about things like explanation marks (bigfish!), comma's (examples "son's first fish") astericks ("*secretspot") or number sign (8#fish). These have all caused problems with file uploads for people.

3) don't use a long file name for your picture (example "mikesreallybigfishcaughtonthecowlitzriverjan112010.jpg") I don't know what the tipping point is, but keep it short if you can.

4) upload the photo LAST just prior to hitting "submit". For some reason (this is a known bug Aaron is working on) if you add the picture too soon when you hit submit it becomes seperated from the report. Don't ask me why...

Anyway, if all else fails and you see your report posted without a pic, e-mail the photo to me with your report date, location, and name on the report. (mike@washingtonlakes.com) I will add them manually. I'm trying to put a note on the report when I see there was a photo mentioned but it isn't there.

Thanks everyone for your patience as we try to get this fixed.
