The Year in Review, 2009
The Year in Review 2009 Hello and welcome to our 2009 “Year in Review”, my annual attempt to summarize everything that’s been going on at WL.com.It seems every year I could say this, but this year was BUSY! Our biggest event by far was the launch of the Premium Member section in 2009. This all new addition to WL.com was the final leg of my original vision from over ten years ago, to have a “personal online fishing diary” for anglers to use and share. The Premium Members have that and ...

Columbia Sportswear Outdoor Clothing Review
New products come along from time to time that truly show how far technology has advanced in a particular field. This summer I got to try out several clothing products from Columbia Sportswear, and find out about some of the latest innovations in outdoor wear. We anglers in the Pacific Northwest know all too well that if you aren’t dressed right, you aren’t going to be able to fish long enough to wait for that all important bite or lunker bass that’s just under the next lily pad. So in a...

Great Places Washington Book Review
This month I’d like to review a new Washington destinations book from Northwest Outdoors writer and radio host John Kruse. This is John’s first book and it looks like he hit a home run with this first effort.Great Places Washington isn’t your typical “go to” guide book. Rather, it is one man’s exploration of some of this state’s prime outdoor recreational areas. And it’s not a one trick pony book. John delves into many different outdoor pursuits, be it fishing, hunting, camping, hiking, bik...

Cost Cutting at Washington State Parks
Cost cutting moves are rapidly becoming bloody amputations at the Washington State Parks Commission. The Parks Commission, like other state agencies, was told by Governor Chris Gregoire to reduce their budget by 23 percent this year. They had already come up with a 10 percent reduction from the 100 million dollars budgeted last year that will result in the closure (or transfer of ownership) of 13 some parks and mothballing of others. Along with this come a significant number of layoffs and a...

It's Sportsmen Show Season!
Looking for something to do now that the holiday season is over? Fortunately, another established season follows on the heels of the holidays, and that would be…Sportsmen Show Season. Every year between January and March you can spend a few hours getting some ideas on where to go for your next outdoors adventure, learning some new skills, socializing with other outdoors enthusiasts, and perhaps even get a great deal on some outdoors merchandise. This can be anything from a fishing lure t...

Year in Review, 2008
Well, another year in the books here at WL.com. This year saw a full year under the new web site, and we were gratified to watch the community grow and new friendships form. Readers made the Forums a popular place to share ideas and meet each other. I’m impressed to see the site continue to grow beyond what I imagined it could be. A fine example of community was this year’s WL.com picnic, which doubled in participation from the previous year. Special thanks to all who helped organize and run t...

Winter Website Updates Coming Soon!
This winter looks to be a busy one here at WL.com. If you aren’t aware, Aaron is working feverishly on our next site upgrade, and what an upgrade it’s going to be! All the features currently on the site will remain, and in addition some new ones that will take the data to a whole new level of use and functionality. I’m not going to go into great detail, but here’s a teaser : Imagine you can take data going back over TEN YEARS to extrapolate the best times to fish a particular body of water, AND...

Central Washington Hotspots
There are a number of waters to explore in Central Washington if you have trout or steelhead on the brain. I got the opportunity to speak with Jeremy Kendall, the owner of Central Fly Fishing (www.centralflyfishing.com) in Wenatchee last night who gave me a run down on what's hot - and what's not - in Central Washington: The Methow River: Fishing for summer steelhead may not be as easy as it was a few years ago, but there are still fish from 4 to 12 pounds to be found in this beautiful st...

Personal Watercraft for Fishing
What fits your needs? Much like how the astronomers wanted to go to another planet and inventors wanted to fly like birds, fisherman have always wanted to be freed from the boundries of the shoreline to fish. From the dawn of time, man has been innovative in finding ways to get out on the water. From hollowing out logs to make a Dugout, to stretching animal hides over a wood frame, they have found ways to get out to where the fish are.In the last couple of decades we have seen ma...

Historic Maryhill's Many Fishing Opportunities
I find myself once again driving Highway 97 in the dark, wondering what interesting scenery I’m missing. This is my second year at “Fish Camp”, an annual event run by walleye guide Ed Iman (http://www.edimanguideservice.com/) for outdoors writers, guides, and businesses associated with the fishing industry. The 220 mile drive from Redmond is well worth it however, as my destination, Maryhill, will put me in the thick of this state’s abundant fishing opportunities on the Columbia River’s Lake Ce...
